Gränsfors Bruk - axes and forging

Here at Gränsfors Bruk, we feel a keen responsibility to ensure that knowledge of axes and axe making is preserved for future generations. We strive to make the best possible axes, based on three different perspectives.

Why Gränsfors Bruk
Everything that is produced requires resources and all these resources have some impact on our environment and on people. What resources we use and what we use these resources for is a question of responsibility. We see it as a combination of environmental, ethical and social responsibility. As a company, we have unlimited responsibility for the total picture and it is our obligation to work on these issues at all times.

Mankind has used axes for over a million years. Throughout history, the axe has helped us source wood for our fires, build our houses and protect ourselves against enemies, and that’s just scratching the surface. For much of human history, the axe has meant the difference between life and death.
We make axes with the best possible function for their particular area of use
We make axes that have as little impact on our environment as possible
We make axes with respect for the people who create them

Making a good product based on the perspectives above is our way of showing responsibility towards everyone who buys and uses our products, towards our environment and towards our staff.

Over more than 100 years, Gränsfors Bruks AB has built up a business based around handcrafted axes and axe expertise, with a focus on quality and environmental responsibility. Today, 30 people work here in production and sales. 80 percent of the production is exported to 30 countries.

When it comes to the quality and feel of the axes, much depends on the experience and skill of the individual craftsman. Each axe is signed with the smith’s initials as a guarantee of quality.

The company is located in the Swedish village of Gränsfors in northern Hälsingland, around 10 km west of the E4 motorway, between Hudiksvall and Sundsvall. The forge sits at the heart of the village and you can hear the rhythmic pounding as you approach.

The axe forge is open weekdays from 9 am to 3 pm. You are more than welcome to visit us and see our axes being forged, sharpened, tempered and fitted with handles.

In addition to the forge and a factory shop, there is also an axe museum and during the summer a restaurant, café and craft courses in subjects such as forging and log-building.
