Swedish midsummer on the countryside - a 4 day culture & nature package
Swedish midsummer on the countryside with cow safari – the ultimate Swedish culture and outdoor experience!
Information
Midsummer's Eve is celebrated in traditional fashion at Mårtesgården, a beautiful old homestead museum in Edsbyn. People get together from far and wide to experience all the festivities that the Swedes associate with midsummer. The other days are made up of cycle tours at a leisurely pace through the beautiful countryside. We also pay a visit to an active farm, where we get to meet both man and beast. You stay in two very pleasant accommodations, both in the style of typical Swedish red houses with white trimmings and with nature right outside your door. The cottages are simple and of a pleasant standard and equipped with a basic kitchen and your own shower/WC.
Day 1
You start off from Edsbyn at 14.00. It is an easy bike ride to your accommodation, a charming, red log cabin located in a an enclosed pasture at the edge of the forest. In the evening you raid the well-stocked refrigerator and cook your own evening meal. If you are lucky with the weather, you can sit outside and enjoy the summer evening at the brightest time of the year.
Day 2
After a hearty breakfast you cycle off to Mårtesgården and participate in the annual Midsummer celebrations in the surroundings of an old-fashioned Hälsingland farmhouse. Evocative music, dance and beautiful national costumes will be a delight for the eye and for the ear. Taste the locally produced delicacies that are on offer. Cheese cake from Hälsingland with cloudberry jam, maybe? Back at the cabin in the evening, you prepare your own evening meal.
Day 3
Midsummer’s Day. After breakfast you cycle past many of the scenic Hälsingland farmhouses. Around midday, lunch is served outdoors in a shelter in a beautiful pine forest. After a hearty meal you climb up onto the carriage that will take you through to the cow pasture. Your hostess Diana will talk to you about how the cows live and answer your questions. The tour ends at Diana's farm. You cycle on towards Alfta, and your next accommodation during your stay. You will be able to see two out of the seven Hälsingland farmhouses (designated UNESCO World Heritage sites) along the way providing magnificent views. A break for a rest with coffee/tea/refreshments can be made at the homestead museum Löka. When you arrive in Alfta, you can go for a swim at Kvarnsvedens badplats (bathing area) before you get settled and cook your evening meal.
Day 4
After a good night's sleep and a filling breakfast you cycle the last leg on back roads that meander between the Hälsingland farmhouses, pastures, forests and lakes. You arrive at your destination in Edsbyn at 13.00, satisfied that your days have replenished your energy banks, filled you with impressions, fantastic memories and lots of exercise!
